Sarah (Davis) Sumpter is a retired Principal and Teacher from the Pittsburgh Public Schools after 40 years of service. She graduated from Carrick High School in 1968 and earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Secondary Education-English and a Master of Arts Degree-Communications from the University of Pittsburgh. Her Principal Certification came from the Heinz School at Carnegie-Mellon University while she was serving as a Vice-Principal at Carrick High School.
Sarah’s teaching career started in 1972 at her alma mater, Carrick High School and she taught English in grades 9 through 12 for over 20 years. She became Principal at Prospect Middle School where she stayed for five years before moving on to Sterrett Classical Academy for ten years until she retired in 2012. During her career, Sarah served on many District committees for writing curriculum as well as initiatives to reform the teacher evaluation process. She was the middle schools representative for the PIAA Advisory Board for the PPS District and she participated in mock interview sessions with perspective teachers from Carlow University. Several student teachers from the University of Pittsburgh and Duquesne University received their teaching certifications after serving practicums under her.
Sarah is very active in her church and has served in several leadership roles. She served as chairman of the Trustee Ministry for eight years. She is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and applies its motto of “Service to all mankind” in her everyday activities.
